Rewind: Belgium’s first circular wind turbine

A pioneering project that quite literally put sustainable energy in motion

In Maasmechelen, Bolckmans Group, developer and investor in sustainable commercial real estate, achieved a remarkable first: the Benelux’s first circular wind turbine. The project, aptly named “Rewind”, marked a tangible step toward a future where sustainable energy, innovation, and circularity work hand in hand.

A forward-looking vision in action

At Bolckmans Group, progress has always meant investing rationally in the future. With the Rewind project, that vision was put into motion, literally.

The turbine was dismantled in Austria, refurbished in Barneveld, and rebuilt in Maasmechelen. After serving 15 years in Austria, it will now generate renewable energy in Belgium for another 20 years. Once that lifecycle ends, the turbine will be dismantled again and repurposed for component reuse and recycling.

Today, the wind turbine delivers green energy directly to a local customer, concrete proof of how Bolckmans Group successfully combines sustainability and economic value.

“Closing the loop, that’s where true sustainability begins,” the Bolckmans team said at the time. “We don’t just build for today, but for the generations of tomorrow.”

A strong partnership for a sustainable future

As with all sustainable projects, collaboration was key. Rewind was made possible through close cooperation between Bolckmans Group, Business in Wind, local authorities, and several wind energy specialists. Every partner shared the same belief: innovation only creates real impact when it’s sustainably embedded in society.

The project aligned perfectly with Bolckmans Group’s ambition to contribute to a future where sustainable commercial real estate becomes the norm, not the exception.

More than energy: a symbol of change

With Rewind, Bolckmans Group set out to achieve more than renewable energy production.

The turbine became a symbol of renewal, circularity, and future-oriented thinking, values deeply rooted in the family company’s DNA. The project perfectly reflected their mission: “Invest in the future, warehousing with purpose.”
